About Chad

Chad is a country of about 10 million people, the majority of whom have never heard the good news of Jesus Christ. The northern region is in the Sahara desert and the southern region is comprised of rich forests that sustain a natural habitat for wildlife. The President maintains a fragile democracy that operates under a secular constitution which promises human rights and freedom of religion. However, due to the economy being boosted by North African and Middle Eastern business, there is a growing Islamic influence entering the country.

The religious composition of Chad is estimated as follows:

     59 % Muslim

     26 % Christian

     14 % Traditional religions

       1 % Other

The evangelical church is quite strong in the south but until recently made no attempt to reach out to its Muslim neighbours in the north! Islam is growing rapidly in the country with a noted increase in Muslim missionaries. Muslims control the government, trade and armed forces of Chad. Two Muslim universities are being built in the capital.

The Need

Of Chad's 140 people groups 72 remain unreached (i.e. without any access to the gospel of Christ). [www.joshuaproject.net] Severe drought, civil war and poor roads have made Chad one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. Only 10% of the population are literate and only 32% have received an education. The high cost of medical care means that many Chadians die unnecessarily from curable diseases. Thousands of street children can be found begging and rummaging through the rubbish mountains in the cities, looking for food and materials to sell.

Mission Africa regards Chad as the responsibility of God's people!  In response to God's leading we have accepted the challenge to send missionaries to serve in Chad in partnership with the Evangelical Church of Chad.

At present the door is wide open for us to put together a team of people with a heart for God and desire to share His love in this country.  Both professional and practical skills can be used as the basis for innovative and effective ways of sharing Jesus’ Love...Chad needs you!

There are numerous opportunities for service in Chad:

  1. Street Children

  2. Teaching of English

  3. Agricultural and veterinary work

  4. Medical work

  5. Theological education

  6. Translation

  7. Church planting

  8. Work among vulnerable women

  9. Building and engineering

Chad has a harsh climate which is very hot and dusty, but we have found the people to be very friendly, hospitable and appreciative of the help we offer. Anyone wanting to work in Chad must have a willingness to learn French, but it is well worth the effort!
