Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, at approximately 19,300 feet. Unlike Mount Kenya, which is steep and in many parts inaccessible without professional mountaineering equipment, Kilimanjaro is accessible by a number of routes, and is suitable for non specialists, so long as they are in good health and well prepared for what is a challenging trek. However, although tough, it is widely recognised that climbing Kilimanjaro is a breathtakingly beautiful experience. Our expedition will be overseen throughout by Mission Tours and Travel, who will provide necessary equipment and porters.
We hope that those who climb Kilimanjaro will use it as a means to raise awareness of Mission Africa. It need hardly be said that mountaineering is outside of the Mission Africa range of expertise, so we have selected Mission Tours and Travel as facilitators for this expedition. They are a high quality mission support and Christian travel company, who have many years experience of delivering specialised services to missions and churches.
We are taking the 6 day trek option which makes it a slower pace. Most days are between 5 to 10 km walking over 6–8 hours. On the 5th day you wake to start for the summit at midnight, in order to arrive at the top before dawn to see the sun rise over Africa! After the trek, you’ll be able to spend a few days on safari in the Masai Mara and visit some of the orphanages and other ministries we are helping to support.
Trek Description: Machame route (Whiskey route) is argueably the most scenic and probably the most beautiful route by which to ascend the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek begins in the south–west area of the mountain at Machame Gate and descends down Mweka, on the south–east side of the mountain thus offering climbers the most varied scenary of Kilimanjaro. Machame is the second most popular route on the mountain. Nights are spent in ‘mountain tents’ sleeping two persons per tent ( 3 man tents, so there is space for your luggage). All your supplies and camping equipment are carried by porters and your meals are prepared.
